Barry Manilow announced that he received a diagnosis with lung cancer and will be having a surgical procedure.
The octogenarian performer, famous for his series of beloved anthems from "Mandy" has made him one of pop music’s cherished performers, will have an operation to extract a portion of his lung in an effort to combat the disease, which is detected early.
“As many of you know, I recently endured six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a relapse of another five weeks.
“Despite the fact that I was recovered from the illness and back on stage in Las Vegas, my excellent physician insisted on an MRI just to ensure that there were no issues.
“The MRI discovered a malignant lesion on my left side that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and a fantastic physician) that it was caught so early.”
He has rescheduled a string of upcoming shows, but stated he would be on stage again by Valentine’s Day for his long-running engagement at his Vegas home.
He continued: “The medical team do not believe it has traveled and I’m taking tests to verify their assessment. So, that’s it. No chemo. No radiotherapy. Just home remedies and classic TV.
“I’m eagerly awaiting until I rejoin my home away from home for our Vegas run for our special weekend performances.”
Manilow is now in the 16th year of a concert series in Nevada. The singer has spent decades in the spotlight and publicly identified as gay in 2017, after tying the knot with his manager and long-term partner privately in 2014.
The duo were in a private partnership for in excess of 35 years. Recently, Manilow discussed how crucial his husband had been to him during his ascent to stardom in the 1970s.
“As my career exploded, it was just overwhelming. And, you know, going back to an vacant room, you can get into a lot of problems if you, you know, you’re on your own night after night,” he said.
“But I encountered my future husband right around when it was blowing up. And I didn’t have to go back to those lonesome rooms. I had somebody to be vulnerable with or to celebrate with.
“I desire that aspiring artists don’t have to go back to those rooms by themselves, because you might succumb to pitfalls. I never did. But it was quite isolating until I met Garry. And then it was joyful.”
