China Accuses United States of ‘Double Standards’ Over Trade Levy Warning

Donald Trump’s newest threat to introduce an extra complete levy on items imported from China has been labeled a “classic case” of American hypocrisy, per the China’s leadership.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson also stated that Beijing could implement its own unrevealed “responsive actions” if the US President carries out his pledge, noting that the country was “fearless” of a possible commercial battle.

This past Friday, Donald Trump responded at Beijing’s move to strengthen its regulations for foreign shipments of rare earths, alleging Beijing of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “under its control”.

He also vowed to cancel a scheduled talks with Beijing’s head of state Xi Jinping, which was expected to take place during a conference in Seoul later this month.

The former president’s remarks on that day shook global markets, with the S&P 500 share index falling by 2.7%, marking its largest decline since April.

These statements revived apprehensions of a commercial dispute between the US and China.

In May, the two sides had consented to remove high import duties on each other’s imports, which had created the possibility of commerce ceasing between the economic powers.

Consequently, United States levies on Chinese goods facing an additional import tax compared with the start of the year, while items from the United States entering the country incur a ten percent duty.

The most recent comments from China – published by the relevant government department in the manner of formal replies to press queries – echoed terminology from the zenith of the recent trade conflict.

The remarks condemned American limits on exports on semiconductors and chips while justifying China’s own export controls on key elements as “routine measures” to ensure national security and that of the global community.

The spokesperson remarked that for “many years”, the United States had “overstretched the concept of state security, exploited overseas sale restrictions and “adopted biased policies against Beijing.

“Resorting to tariff threats is not the correct approach to engage with China,” the spokesperson said.

“The nation’s view” on a tariff war has always been unchanging: we are not seeking one, but we are unafraid of one.”

Recently, the Chinese government declared it was tightening foreign shipment restrictions on key elements and other materials critical for high-technology production.

This was seen as a significant step, as the country processes about the vast majority of the world’s rare earths, which are utilized in items such as photovoltaic modules and handheld devices.

Latest statements from both governments are being seen by observers as a method of strengthening positions in preparation for upcoming negotiations.
