Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials voiced fury after former President Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and asserted they should be taken into custody and penalized "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.

The Message That Sparked the Dispute

The video footage, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in defense or security roles.

"As we did, you all took an oath to safeguard and uphold this founding document," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "And right now, the risks to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our regulations are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can reject unlawful commands, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that contravene the legal system or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Incensed Reaction

The video message appeared to provoke a furious response from the ex-president.

On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he declared: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Nation. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials Respond

Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership released a unified statement censuring the remarks.

"Violent politics has no role in America," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our United States with tremendous national pride and distinction. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and risky threats of violence against members of Congress, and urge Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."

The party representatives also stated that they had been in touch with protective services "to ensure the security of these representatives and their families."

"Donald Trump must immediately delete these unhinged online messages and recant his violent rhetoric before he leads to violence," the announcement added.

Lawmakers' Defiant Response

The officials who were featured in the video also published a response.

"We identify as veterans and security experts who value this nation and took an oath to protect and uphold the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No warning, coercion, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred responsibility."

"The significant point is that the former president considers it punishable by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the constitution and responsibility to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They added: "Every American must come together and censure the president's calls for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a period for moral clarity."

Further Governmental Responses

The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's remarks and published on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is calling for the execution of government members."

He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and absolutely."

The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", describing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature telling troops to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in the nation's past."

The Republican leader also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the offense of treason" but that "lawyers have to examine the terminology and decide all that."

Administration Response

During a White House press conference on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Is the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary answered: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is responding to," the representative declared. "There are active officials of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to current military personnel urging them to disobey the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She added: "The integrity of our armed forces rests on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can result in casualties, it can result in confusion, and that's what these members of Congress ... are basically encouraging."
