New Year Partygoers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snow Predicted Across the UK

Forecasters are reporting a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Continue In Spite of Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This comes despite advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," stated the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks shows, with no rain and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be low, so warm wraps vital, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for Friday

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on trains and buses.

Readings Forecast to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Warnings Activated

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this indicated the weather was likely to trigger significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is completely paramount.
