New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams declared his intention to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite months of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, the mayor had lashed out at the former governor, describing him as a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a new statement, Adams changed his position, stating he now plans to support the former governor in communities where he holds significant backing.

“It's essential to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how vital this race is,” the mayor commented.

The mayor further explained, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has attracted attention internationally and represented aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.

During a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would reject the mayor's support if offered.

Months ago, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dropped in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered reporters asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”

The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which took place right after a contentious candidate debate.
