Russian President Vladimir Putin Vows Continuous Energy Shipments to the Indian Nation in Snub of American Demands

Amid a clear message to the United States, President Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to maintain “continuous” shipments of oil to India. This declaration came during a summit where both heads of state met in New Delhi and asserted their bilateral ties were “resilient to outside influence.”

A Signal Directed at the Western Countries

Putin's comments, delivered Friday, seemed to be a pointed rebuke at Washington, who have sought to pressure New Delhi into scaling back its historical ties with Moscow. This comes comes after previous Washington's moves, notably additional tariffs on India due to its acquisition of Moscow's energy exports.

“Russia is a reliable exporter of energy resources and all necessary for the growth of India’s energy sector,” the Russian president remarked. “We are ready to persist in ensuring the steady supply of fuel for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, while not referencing crude specifically, echoed the focus by stating that “energy security has been a strong and vital cornerstone of the bilateral partnership.”

Questioning Washington's Stance

Before the summit, in a television interview, Putin had criticized US interference regarding India's dealings with Russia. The president questioned, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our uranium, why shouldn’t India have the equivalent access?”

Putin's arrival represented his first journey to India after the start of the conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi undertook a visible effort to display that the personal rapport between the men persisted strongly.

A Personal Reception

In a notable step, Prime Minister Modi met Putin right off the plane. Both leaders embraced warmly as old friends before having a closed-door supper the night before the summit.

Modi in his statement called India's partnership with Russia as “a guiding star” and noted it was “built on mutual respect and deep trust.”

Expanding Strategic Cooperation

The meeting produced a number of key agreements in the fields of defence and trade relations. One significant result was the completion of an joint economic plan extending until 2030, which aims to increase twofold mutual trade to $100bn annually by the target year.

The leaders also agreed to restructure their defence ties. Although Russia continues to be India's primary exporter of weapons, the volume has declined in recent years as India aims to widen its supply base.

Their communique emphasized cooperation in the collaborative manufacturing of cutting-edge weapons platforms, though specific reference of purchases such as the Sukhoi Su-57 were not made.

Ultimately, both nations reiterated that in the “present intricate, tense, and unpredictable international environment, Russian-Indian ties stay resilient to foreign influence.”
