The world grieves the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born musician and performer whose captivating vocal talent was instrumental in popularizing reggae music across the globe. He passed away at the age of eighty-one.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your support was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.
Cliff was beloved for hits including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat musical style and positive spirit brought him a large and longstanding following.
Beyond his music accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is viewed as a landmark of film in Jamaica.
He was one of just a handful of artists, alongside the legendary Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
