The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
