Why Real Madrid Possess 'Total Faith' in Teenager Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

When an teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his age and experience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official full international.

Pitarch has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with interest.

In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.

Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
