Zero McKenna Celtic FC Discussions as Craig Bellamy Commits to Welsh National Team

Both have been linked with the coaching position at the Scottish champions following the former manager's departure on the start of the week.

The Manager's Stance on The Scottish Club

McKenna described Celtic as "an enormous soccer institution" but stressed he is "deeply involved" of a "extensive rebuilding" with the Championship side.

The 39-year-old took charge of Portman Road in 2021 and guided the team to the Premier League with consecutive elevations, but they won just four games last campaign as they were demoted back to the second division and they currently sit twelfth place in the Championship.

"There have been any of those discussions," the English capital native ex- Irish young player said when questioned about being on Celtic's shortlist.

"It's not something I have considered seriously, or where any portion of my focus is currently.

"I have a special job here at a remarkable team. And we're at a crucial phase of the season. Everything external hasn't reached my awareness."

Background and Contractual Details

It has been suggested that the manager would be willing to talk to Celtic given his boyhood allegiances.

"Growing up, we all have our preferences," he said when questioned about those. "It's unlikely everyone has to go around and declare what they were, but naturally it's a massive football club."

The coach signed a fresh multi-year deal in 2024 and was questioned about his reported £5m release clause.

"In every manager's contract, there are things," he replied. "I'm unaware what mine are and, were I informed, I wouldn't tell you anyway!

"I approach this role like I will remain Ipswich manager indefinitely. I understand that's not always going to be the situation, but I'll always do my best as long as I remain in position."

Bellamy's Situation

The former striker represented the Hoops on loan from Newcastle United in 2005, but the ex- Welsh forward is inclined to complete the ongoing global tournament campaign, a stance that would practically eliminate the 46-year-old from assuming the Glasgow position.

Wales are currently third in their World Cup group behind leaders Belgium and second-placed North Macedonia.

Wins over Liechtenstein and their rivals in next month would book their position in the qualification play-offs, but they are virtually assured of reaching that stage, thanks to a productive Nations League campaign, even if they fail to end up Group J second place.

Given his current position, Bellamy, whose agreement concludes after the European Championship, would be unavailable until after the play-offs at the minimum.
